The Town of Plantersville was originally chartered on February 24, 1890, but through the residents’ desires, the Town decided not to elect public officials during the 1950s, and the Town’s charter was rescinded by the State of Mississippi. In 1964, the Town was reincorporated so that the community could receive state funding for a medical clinic. The Town’s first mayor was T. W. Johnson under the Town’s original charter. E. F. (Pete) Temple (served from 1964 until 1969) became the Town’s new mayor after reincorporation.
Like most municipalities in Lee County, Plantersville began as a farming community and slowly transformed into a small town through the development of the Kansas City, Memphis, and Birmingham Railroad and the construction of Mississippi Highway 6. The Town’s commercial growth occurred along the highway, industrial growth along the railroad and the residential growth filled the land between.
Now, more than 100 years after its founding, the adaptability and heritage of Plantersville continues. Local residents and businesses alike work together and take pride in their town. Plantersville has excellent police, fire, and public works departments as well as its own municipal justice system. The new, modern City Hall building is an excellent facility for local residents to use in conducting their city-related business. The renovated Plantersville Community Center provides residents with a facility to host family-oriented functions. Today, Plantersville maintains its small-town characteristics while offering modern-day services and opportunities for its residents.
The Town of Plantersville is a Code Charter Municipality.
